There are a few easy steps you can take to get ready for an infrared sauna session to both maximize your benefits and enhance your experience. The first set of steps are essentials and the last few are optional.

Essential Steps:

1. Get Hydrated:

Drink at least 16 ounces of clean water (ideally with electrolyte minerals added) before you enter into the sauna. Bring a metal bottle (not plastic) or glass of water with you to drink during your session as well. Getting thoroughly hydrated before your session will help you sweat more and prevent dehydration.

2. Least Clothing Possible:

The goal of an infrared sauna is to expose as much surface area on your skin to the infrared light, therefore going in nude is ideal.

Clothing can block some of the infrared light from hitting your skin, so if you do wear clothing wear as little as possible such as a bathing suit.

3. Remove Makeup and Jewelry:

Makeup is another slight buffer from the infrared light hitting your skin. Jewelry (depending on the material it is made up) could heat up against your skin.

4. Bring Three Towels:

You will place one on the bench, one on the floor, and bring in a third to wipe off the sweat as you go. Wiping sweat off during your session will actually help you sweat even more.

Optional Steps:

1. Do Some Light Exercise:

Getting your body moving before a session, such as doing some jumping jacks, will increase circulation throughout your body and allow you to sweat even faster when you begin your session.

2. Prepare Music / Audio Book / Podcast:

If you like to listen to something during your session, pull it up on your smartphone or tablet. In High Tech Health’s Foundation and Smart models you have the option to bluetooth audio to our speakers.

3. Don’t Have a Full Stomach:

Digestion is the second highest consumer of energy in our body after our brain. Going into a sauna session after eating a meal will divert energy that could instead be used for healing and repair. Ideal is to wait at least an hour after eating before getting into the sauna.

4. Binders:

Consider taking supplements such as activated charcoal and/or zeolite 30 minutes before a session to absorb toxins that have worked their way into the digestive tract or blood during a sauna session.

By doing these steps you will set the stage for an optimal session, which will then inspire you to use your sauna more regularly.
