Infrared Science 101

Infrared light is a large portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (just beyond visible red light) and is subdivided into three components: Far Infrared (FIR), Mid Infrared (MIR), and Near Infrared (NIR).

Each component of infrared has different energetic states and interacts with specific molecules in the body. Far infrared in saunas has been shown to be beneficial in the short and long term.

Near and mid infrared, on the other hand, are harmful to the eyes. They can be beneficial in certain non-sauna applications that apply them at specific power levels directly to the surface of the skin.

Steer clear of saunas called full-spectrum (which means they emit, near, mid and far infrared). If you want to learn more about this topic, click here to read our Near Infrared Sauna Dangers article.

The right kind of infrared for health benefits in a sauna is far infrared, such as what you get inside all High Tech Health saunas.

Features Important to Getting Infrared Sauna Benefits

In addition to getting a sauna that is far infrared only, there are other important factors to consider when purchasing an infrared sauna to ensure you are getting the most benefits.

1. 100% Single Wood Construction: saunas with “other” woods like plywood and particleboard off-gas formaldehyde into the sauna when they heat up. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. At High Tech Health we use 100% low VOC woods of either poplar or hemlock.

2. Actual Low EMF: sadly many saunas claim to be low EMF even when they are not. If high, EMF can lead to cellular stress particularly in heart and brain cells, including DNA strand breakage, and negate the benefits of your infrared sauna. High Tech Health saunas have the proven lowest total EMF of any infrared sauna on the market!

3. Active Ventilation: by circulating the air in an infrared sauna with a fan you can remove the CO2 you are breathing out and let in oxygen which will help you feel much more comfortable during a session. High Tech Health saunas are the only sauna on the market with this feature.

4. Maximizing Far Infrared Light Exposure: High Tech Health’s patented Ideal Spectrum™ heaters have been proven to have the highest output of far infrared and heat you up 34% faster and more effectively.

If you get a sauna that uses the right type of infrared and has the right features to optimize the benefits, then yes, infrared saunas are really good for you and will help you feel your most vital!
